Puppy Training 101
So you have a new puppy. The perfect best friend, the one you have dreamed of your whole life. Now it is time to help your puppy learn how to live with you. Remember that all your puppy wants to do is please you and receive your praise in return. That is the key for living with a puppy.
Crate Training
One of the steps is to introduce him to his crate. Let him learn that is not the jail some people think, Make sure the crate is the right size for his breed, If it is too large make sure to block off the section so he live in the small side. A puppy training crate of the right size for his breed will quickly become a haven for him and a place to retire in when he gets tired or just overwhelmed by his new surroundings. Make sure he has his own blanket for comfort and when he looks tired place him in his crate and leave him.
Once he is asleep close the door so that he becomes used to being enclosed but still feels safe. This will be of great help to you in helping to get him “through the night” without too much barking and yelping. A training crate will also give you peace of mind for when you need to leave him for a short time.
Housebreaking
A crate will be of help in what will be your most important training concern when you bring your new puppy home, housebreaking, as a dog will not usually soil his sleeping area. A puppy will likely relieve himself about half a dozen times a day. Any healthy dog over six weeks of age can be taught to go in the right place, unless he is to be kept permanently outside.
First get plenty of newspaper as this will become the best tool in teaching him where you want him to go. Put down some newspaper away from his crate and where he eats and drinks. Puppies usually relieve themselves after having eaten and will give you a clue that it is about to take place by sniffing and circling an area of the floor. Move him quickly to the paper and whilst he is still in the act praise him, he will quickly get the idea what is expected of him.
Dispose of the top layers of the newspaper but place the old bottom layers to the top of the new as to his keen sense of smell this will reinforce his idea of “where to go”. Gradually move the newspaper closer to the door then finally outside to the place you wish your dog to go and remember to praise him as he goes as this will reinforce the lesson.
Follow these simple tips and your new puppy will be house broken in no time at all and with little effort. Remember all he wants is your praise, to make you happy. Never strike or punish his for doing his business, patiently take him to the proper place and praise him for going there.
Remember that with a little patience, persistence and praise, time spent puppy training will help you produce a well behaved dog that will quickly become the well loved member of your family you intended.
