How can I get my on-year old dog to let me know when he needs to go out.?
My dog is trained to go potty outside. However, he does not let me know when he needs to go out. The whole summer he could go outside on his own when he needed to go. Now that the weather is colder and the door is closed, he cannot go outside unless he lets me know and I open the door. He either doesn’t know how to let me know or he doesn’t want to. Either way, I’m finding surprises every morning and sometimes throughout the day. I need help in training him. I’ve tried bells. He seems to be afraid of them. Any suggestions?
This is what we did with our pup when he was 3 months… now 4 years old.
1. Everytime you take him out, take his paw and scratch the door. Praise him and go outside.
We tried the bell too, but he didn’t really use it.
2. Walk him till he pees or poops. Praise him.
3. Be consistent.
4. Keep an eye on the dog. He may be doing the right thing, but if you don’t see the signal he just can’t hold it.
For our pup it took him about a month to pick it up.
When he needs to go out, he sits by the door and waits.
That’s our cue to take him out.
In the mean time, I would recommend taking him out regularly so your dog can do it’s business, but use steps 1 through 3 everytime you go out. Also, for the evening about 1 hour after eating, take him out until he does pee and poop.
If you can, install a doggy door. The waiting at the door has come in handy when I’m at someone else’s house.
